Dr. Dermot M. Phelan, MD

Description

Dr. Dermot Phelan serves as the Director of the Sports Cardiology Center and Medical Director of Cardiovascular Imaging at Atrium Health Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute. A globally recognized expert in athlete heart care, he is the team cardiologist for the Carolina Panthers and Charlotte FC and acts as a consultant to the NFL, NBA, and MLB. Prior to joining Atrium Health in 2020, Dr. Phelan founded and led the Sports Cardiology Center at the Cleveland Clinic for eight years. He earned his MD and PhD from University College Dublin and completed an advanced fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic. A prolific researcher, he has authored over 120 publications and contributed as a lead author to international guidelines on evaluating athletes post-COVID-19.
